A Stronger Global Sleep Workforce

Over the years, the BRPT has played a pivotal role in shaping the field of sleep technology, setting high standards for professional competency and ensuring that patients receive quality sleep care that highlights the program’s evolution.

One of the key ways in which the BRPT has done that is in creating a structured pathway for professionals at various stages of their careers in sleep health:

  • The Certified Polysomnographic Technician (CPSGT) credential serves as an entry-level certification, encouraging new professionals to build foundational knowledge and gain hands-on experience.
  • The Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) credential is the gold standard for sleep technologists, signifying advanced expertise in sleep studies and patient care.
  • For those seeking to expand their role in clinical sleep health, the Certification in Clinical Sleep Health (CCSH) recognizes professionals with specialized knowledge in patient education and sleep management.
  • Presented as a digital badge, the Pediatric Sleep certificate recognizes professionals who have demonstrated advanced knowledge in pediatric sleep health.

Each year, we evaluate the impact of our credentialing and certification programs, reflecting on how many new sleep health professionals become certified. These numbers not only reflect the individual achievement and commitment of the sleep professionals who continue to invest in their education, but also reinforce the broader commitment of the sleep community as whole to delivering high-quality patient care.

 CPSGT

The CPSGT exam provides an important entry point into the field of sleep medicine, ensuring that new professionals gain the fundamental knowledge base and practical experience essential to advance in their careers.

In 2024, 155 individuals entered the field and became CPSGT certificate holders. Currently, there are 253 active CPSGTs.

 RPSGT

For more than four decades, the RPSGT credential has been the gold standard in sleep technology. As BRPT’s largest pool of credential holders, RPSGTs play a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders.

By the end of 2024, there were a total of 16,421 active RPSGT credential holders. In 2024, 530 candidates passed the RPSGT exam in the United States, and the total number of international candidates who passed the RPSGT exam totaled 157. These credential holders represent six continents and more than 35 countries across the globe.

In addition, RPSGTs continue to demonstrate their commitment to continuing education and professional development with a high recertification rate of 75 percent. Over the course of 2024, 1,668 RPSGTs completed the recertification process.

CCSH

Since its launch in 2014, the CCSH credential has become a vital asset for advanced-level health professionals dedicated to improving patient outcomes in sleep health.

By the end of 2024, there were 1,152 CCSH credential holders, with 79 certified in 2024 alone. Last year, 114 CCSH credential holders completed the recertification process.

Pediatric Sleep Certificate

As awareness of pediatric sleep disorders continues to grow, so does the need for specialized expertise in the field. In 2024, 36 professionals earned the Pediatric Sleep certificate, further strengthening the industry’s commitment to high-quality pediatric sleep care.

This digital badge is particularly beneficial as it’s easily shared online in a way that is simple, trusted, and verifiable. Unlike a paper certificate, a single click on the Pediatric Sleep digital badge reveals a detailed description of the specific knowledge and skills required to earn it.

Evolving Expertise

From a large number of technologists earning the RPSGT and CPSGT certifications to the expanding role of CCSH professionals and the rising interest in pediatric sleep expertise, these trends highlight a dedicated workforce committed to advancing sleep health.

As the field of sleep medicine evolves, so too does the need for highly trained professionals who can provide quality care and education to patients. Whether through foundational certifications, advanced credentials, or specialized digital badges, BRPT remains committed to supporting sleep professionals at every stage of their careers.

Looking ahead, we’re excited to see how these trends shape the future of sleep technology and patient care in the years to come.
