The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) announced that 2,500 dentists across the country have achieved AADSM Qualified Dentist status, strengthening patient access to oral appliance therapy (OAT) for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
OAT offers a comfortable, clinically-proven treatment option for snoring and OSA. The therapy uses a custom-fit oral appliance worn during sleep to help keep the airway open. Oral appliances are quiet, portable, and have high long-term compliance rates, which helps patients stick with treatment and achieve better sleep and overall health. Treatment is best provided by a qualified local dentist who can complete an in-person exam, customize the appliance, monitor comfort and fit, and provide ongoing care throughout treatment.
“Reaching 2,500 AADSM Qualified Dentists is an important milestone for patients who need convenient access to high-quality care close to home,” said AADSM President Dr. Paul Jacobs. “Obstructive sleep apnea is a serious condition, and oral appliance therapy can be a comfortable and effective option for many patients. By expanding the number of qualified dentists available nationwide, we are helping more people connect with the care they need in their own communities.”
AADSM Qualified Dentists complete standardized education in dental sleep medicine that aligns with the AADSM’s evidence-based standards for practice. These dentists are trained to provide OAT in coordination with physicians, supporting a team-based approach to treating OSA.
For patients, the growing network means more opportunities to receive care from a dentist in their area rather than relying on distant providers or one-size-fits-all approaches. Local dental care is especially important because OAT requires a custom-fit device, follow-up visits, adjustments, and ongoing monitoring to help ensure comfort and effectiveness.
